Wind Breaker is a Japanese manga series written and illustrated by Satoru Nii that began serialization on Kodansha's Magazine Pocket manga website in January 2021.

First and foremost, I absolutely loved the visuals at the start of the first episode. The sketchy imagery of a boy walking along a tightrope until it snaps and he falls sets a good stage for our protagonist, Haruka Sakura. Sakura, a boy with two-toned hair and heterochromia has been looked down upon by society for his entire life, with most people taking one look at him and discounting the kind of person he has the potential to be – in short, he has always been painted as a delinquent. Rather than spending his life trying to prove everyone wrong, Haruka has decided that he will lean  into the stereotype that everyone has  boxed him into. And how is he going to prove it? By enrolling in a school known for being the hub for delinquents and fighters. He wants to fight to be the scummiest of the scum. At least if he does that, he’ll find his place in this world.

Most people choose their school based on the sports team or the ability to get into impressive universities. I mean even choosing a school based on where your friends are is more common, but I think this is the first time I’ve seen someone choose a school based on the fighting scene that surrounds it. But hey! I’m down to see how Sakura does in this new school. After all, it’s quickly shared with the viewers that Furin is not the school built solely for scum, but instead a very important thing for everyone in his new town. I loved this development and I loved how it tied into Sakura’s character. Like I said before, Sakura has been type-cast as a hopeless delinquent but he actually has a good heart – he returns forgotten goods to the man from the cafe and he protects Kotoha multiple times in the episode. If he was truly a bad kid, he wouldn’t have done either of those things. Yeah, he’s good at fighting, but he doesn’t seem too good at putting on the whole tough guy act – which is fine with me. It just shows me that he has a lot of self-discovery to do.The surprise of Bofurin being defenders was absolutely lovely. How these boys, who would otherwise be seen as dangers are actually praised for their protection of the city

Mashle: Magic and Muscles

                   My Anime List Score: 7.5 / 10

I think the best way to describe Hajime Komoto’s Mashle: Magic and Muscles is that it’s basically the main character from One Punch Man as a teenager attending Hogwarts.

Synopsis:

In a world where magic is everywhere and you’re status is determined by your magical aptitude, any person born without any magic is ostracized and considered a liability to the community. Magical police will even forcibly expel any people discovered to have no magical talent from society in order to protect the gene pool.

Mash is one such magic-less individual and, in order to protect him, his father has raised him in isolation in the forest for his entire life. There, Mash has devoted all of his time to physically training his body, consequently developing a crazy level of strength and agility that essentially makes him super human. Even when he’s discovered by the magical police, he’s easily able to defend himself. That’s when the officer who’d been attempting to arrest him proposes an unorthodox plan. He tells Mash to enroll at Magic School and achieve the title of Divine Visionary, a student who is held up as the best that society has to offer. If he can do that, than people would have to accept him, and maybe he’ll even be able to bring about reform that will change the world for the better!

Review:

Mashle is a series with essentially one joke that feels like it should get old very fast, but I found myself laughing pretty much the whole way through this volume anyway.

The humor is pretty straightforward. Mash will be presented with a challenger or task that should be impossible for a regular person to overcome, and then he’ll just punch his way through it no problem while everyone around him freaks out or is stunned into stupefied silence. It’s, admittedly, a bit formulaic, but Komoto’s comedically simple and silly art-style manages to make this same punchline funny just about every time. The art actually reminds me a lot of Mob Psycho 100 and, while I think some people might not find it appealing, I think it adds a lot to humor.

One of the other things that helps keep the manga from getting dull, despite essentially telling the same joke over and over, is that Mash is kind of an idiot and his blasé attitude and complete lack of tact are pretty consistently hilarious.

                             Spy × Family

My Anime List Score: 7.5 / 10

Spy x Family is a delightful anime show which has many fans watching just for its hopelessly endearing main character: little Anya (voice of Atsumi Tanezaki). The show isn’t just about a 4-or-5-year-old orphan girl. It is about her life in a make-shift fake family, and her desire to make that family a real one.

Twilight (voice of Takuya Eguchi) is a spy of the highest caliber, a master of disguise, with a reputation for getting the job done. When he is assigned a target so elusive that the only way to get to him is through the target’s 6-year-old son, Twilight realizes he needs to infiltrate the boy’s school. Since the boy is attending a prestigious, high-security private school, the only way for Twilight to do that is to have a 6-year-old kid himself.

Twilight heads to the local orphanage and ends up with Anya, a slightly-too-young girl who, unbeknownst to him, can read minds as a result of a failed medical experiment. Anya knows Twilight is a spy, not because he told her but because she can read his mind. However, being so young, she can only interpret what she reads in people’s minds as a preschooler would, and her attempts to act on the information she discovers often leads to chaos and confusion.

Anya has been adopted out from the orphanage several times before, but always returned for her bizarre behavior. She is longing for a place to belong, for someone to belong to. Who more amazing than a world-class spy!

When he realizes the school favors students from stable, two-parent families, Twilight needs to find a wife fast. With a little help from Anya, he strikes a deal with Yor (voice of Saori Hayami) - a hapless government employee with a secret of her own. Yor has a side-gig as an assassin, a job she got into as a teen when she was desperate to provide for her younger brother. She sees her position as a noble one, one that keeps her country safe, and this fake marriage will protect her. It’s the perfect business deal.

Yet even keeping things technical and businesslike, Twilight and Yor cannot help noticing the inner father-and-motherhood that is awakening within them as they inadvertently fall in love with their quirky little Anya, nor the softening care they are developing towards one another. Both find themselves wondering, on occasion, what it might be like if this was more than just a ruse. Yet both feel like it could never be more than that. They feel that the real them wouldn’t be accepted by the other, and therefore they keep themselves hidden. Which has, of course, inspired every fan to ship this couple and wait with hopeful anticipation for the day these three misfits open up to each other, accept one another fully, and become a REAL family!

Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba

My Anime List Score: 9.5 / 10

Demon Slayer is an anime based on the manga series and is comprised of 26 episodes. It is set in the Taisho era of Japan.  It is an unique setting since it shows a time in Japan’s past where swordsmen are still a common sight.  However, you’ll get a surprise later on.  It follows Kamada Tanjiro who is living a happy normal life with his family consisting of his mother and several siblings.  They live atop of a mountain with Tanjiro regularly heading down to the village to buy and sell items.  On one fateful day, he returns to find his family massacred.

His sister, Nezuko, who seemed mortally wounded, was still clinging onto life and so Tanjiro races down to the village in an effort to get her to a doctor.  Along the way, his sister seemingly transforms into a demon and that is when he realizes that was what had slaughtered his family. Tanjiro later encounters a demon slayer who informs him of the Demon Slayer Corps.  It is an organization comprised of people who works in the shadows to protect the people by slaying the demons.  The demon slayer, seeing potential, recommends Tanjiro to a master to help train him up, which will also help Tanjiro find a cure for his sister.

The demons have a few traits that make them stand out (which also has a few parallels to western vampires).  First, they cannot stand sunlight, withering to ashes as soon as the rays hit them.  Second, they consume human, more so for their blood rather than flesh.  For each human they consume, they get stronger.  The more powerful demons gain additional abilities and change forms, looking more like monsters and losing any trace that they were once humans.  Finally, the only way to kill a demon is to decapitate them using a special sword.

Demon Slayer starts off with a strong first episode and then dials it down as it shows Tanjiro’s training.  While Tanjiro shows potential, he had to work hard into realizing it and so he is constantly being thrashed in the beginning.  The fourth episode is where the pacing starts to pick up again, leading to a climactic battle that served as an excellent ending to the episode. The scenarios only get better from there as Tanjiro learns of the cause of the demons and the one who is ultimately behind it.  that person is the only one who would be ablet o tell Tanjiro how to turn Nezuko back to a human.  Tanjiro’s quest to find this person takes some interesting turns.  You would expect Tanjiro’s quest to be a slow burn yet the developments are quicker than you’d expect as he finds some promising leads.

So not only is Tanjiro is a demon slayer travelling with a demon but Nezuko doesn’t act like a typical demon either.  While she isn’t shown to have any extraordinary powers and her healing factor is slow, her behavior is different.  She doesn’t speak but is able to understand just fine.  This isn’t to mention the bamboo she keeps biting on all the time. Most of the variety of the anime comes in the different types of powers that demons have.  A few of them are definitely unique and it shows its creativity in how they apply those powers in battles.  Tanjiro relies on a set number of “forms” and the way he triumphs over the demons lacks the same creativity.  However, the battles nail the atmosphere.  Coupled with the unique aesthetics of the anime, and it is visually striking when the water effects of Tanjiro’s sword skills come into play during his attacks.

The anime has a good mix of humor and emotional moments, managing to balance those two.  There are a few annoying characters, especially the one who is afraid of everything.  You wonder how he managed to survive thus far (naturally, he has a hidden ability).  The other character that’s extremely impatient is also frustrating to watch.  However, both of them eventually become more endearing.

Tanjiro is shown to be too kind hearted and naïve at times.  He easily forgives even though the enemy may have been cruel and killed countless humans before (sometimes right before his eyes).  A significant amount of time is spent on each demon’s backstories, their past lives as humans before they turned, in an attempt to justify their actions.  On the flipside, while you do expect the demons to do horrifying things, they still manage to do things even worse than you’d expect. There is a really nice battle towards the end of the anime against one of the strongest demons that Tanjiro has faced thus far.  While Tanjiro pulls some moves we haven’t seen before out of nowhere, the fight emphasizes the contrast in colors and the fluidity of Tanjiro’s movement as well as the strong connection between him and Nezuko.  All this leads to one of the most visually and emotionally spectacular fights within the anime.

After the climactic battle, it spends the rest of the episodes with massive amounts of world-building.  It expands on the Demon Slayer Corps, its inner workings, and Tanjiro undergoing further training to power up.  We learn about the motivations of several characters and it manages to keep hitting the high emotional notes.

While lacking in action, the ending is still engrossing, especially since it leads to an arc that you’ll eagerly anticipate

Overall, Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba manages to exceed your expectations of a typical action anime.  The concept isn’t terribly special but its execution is pretty solid.  The iconic battle towards the end of the anime is one of the best in terms of its emotional atmosphere.  The ending, while lacking in action, is still engrossing especially since it leads to an arc that you’ll be eagerly anticipating.

                                    One Piece

                 My Anime List Score: 8.3 / 10

One Piece is a Japanese manga series written and illustrated by Eiichiro Oda. It has been serialized in Shueisha's shōnen manga magazine Weekly Shōnen Jump since July 1997, with its chapters compiled in 109 tankōbon volumes as of July 2024.

The Wano Arc of One Piece was not only the most hyped and anticipated arc of the series, it was probably the most exciting and impactful arc in any manga since maybe Dragon Ball’s Namek Saga. Even if you view Wano separate from the rest of the series, the author fleshed out the country, its government, backstory, and its characters so much that it can easily stand alone as its own story.

Unfortunately… it’s also the first arc in One Piece that left me with more disappointments than the standard arc. Certain important characters that got robbed out of potential growth, certain backstories we didn’t get to see… and most importantly, the introduction of Yamato, the most sloppily introduced and rushedly overhyped character in the entire franchise.

The very minute we meet him, he’s “I’M THE SON OF KAIDO, I’M GONNA BE THE NEXT STRAW HAT, I MET ACE AND WAS INSPIRED BY ODEN, I’M GONNA JOIN THE STRAW HATS, I HAVE ADVANCED CONQUEROR’S AND AWAKENED MYTHICAL ZOAN!”

                                    Gintama

                 My Anime List Score: 9.5 / 10

Gintama is a Japanese manga series written and illustrated by Hideaki SorachiThe series has been adapted into an original video animation (OVA) by Sunrise and was featured at the Jump Festa 2006 Anime Tour in 2005. This was followed by a full 367-episode anime television series, which debuted in April 2006 on TV Tokyo, and finished in October 2018. Three animated films have been produced. The first film premiered in April 2010. The second film premiered in July 2013. The third and final film premiered in January 2021. Besides the anime series, there have been various light novels and video games based on Gintama. A live-action film adaptation of the same name was released in July 2017 in Japan by Warner Bros. Pictures.

It’s very difficult for long-running anime series with hundreds of episodes to not get stale, and actually improve over time. Gintama actually pulls it off. It’s primarily a comedy series, but also incorporates action and drama, and does so in a way that doesn’t feel forced, which is no small feat in itself.

What also makes it unique are the lack of long story arcs, which are par for the course in long-running shows like this. While there are multiple-episode arcs, most of them only run 2-3 episodes; the longest ones I can recall so far go for no more then 5-6 episodes. However, being just shy of 300 episodes in, I’m not sure if the show bucks the trend somewhere along the line. I suppose I’ll find out, but so far I find this creative decision to be refreshing.

Which brings up the one-episode stories, or ‘filler’ episodes. This is the other thing that stands out with this series; while filler in most other anime is usually mediocre and regarded by fans with derision, most of the filler in Gintama is actually awesome, and has some of the funniest, most entertaining moments in the entire series.

Then there are the characters, and how the way they are handled is fundamentally different than just about any other long-running shounen, in that they don’t grow or change much, if at all. The main character, Sakata Gintoki, for instance, is a samurai, but most of his character growth (if any) remains in the past and is kept mysterious; in the present, he’s an impertinent drunk who picks his nose, but also happens to care deeply about his friends and his community. All his character development has already happened. This is just about true about all the other main and recurring characters (there are way too many of them to get into all of them in just one post), who, for the purpose of some glorious running jokes, have weird character tics, traits and flaws that absolutely do not change. In spite of this, there isn’t even one of them that feels like a one-note, cardboard cutout character.

                                One Punch Man

                 My Anime List Score: 9.7 / 10

One-Punch Man is a Japanese superhero manga series created by One. It tells the story of Saitama, an independent superhero who, because he can defeat any opponent with a single punch due to having trained himself to his peak condition, grows bored from a lack of challenge, setting out to find powerful opponents, while making allies of other heroes as well.

The story is set on a supercontinent version of Earth on which powerful monsters and supervillains wreak havoc. The millionaire Agoni creates the Hero Association, which employs superheroes to fight evil. Saitama, an unassociated hero, hails from City Z and performs heroic deeds as a hobby. For three years, he has trained enough to defeat any enemy with a single punch; his unmatched strength leaving him bored. He becomes a reluctant mentor to Genos, a cyborg seeking revenge against another cyborg who killed his family and destroyed his hometown after Saitama defeats the monster Mosquito Girl that defeated Genos.

Saitama and Genos join the Hero Association, hoping to attain notability, but Genos instantly obtains an S-Class rank. Due to scoring low on the written exam despite having a perfect score on the physical exam, Saitama only becomes a C-Class hero. His feats remain unnoticed even after saving people from an asteroid and then the Deep Sea King, barely getting himself promoted to B-Class with help from Mumen Rider. Later, shortly before her death, the seer Shibabawa predicts that the world is in great danger as the alien Boros invades the planet. The heroes kill the invaders and destroy Boros's ship as Saitama defeats Boros in single combat.

Monsters begin appearing faster while the rogue martial arts Garo, a former apprentice of the hero Bang, and self-dubbed "Hero Hunter," begins terrorizing heroes. Due to childhood bullying, he holds a grudge against everything "heroic". The heroes learn that the monster influx comes from the Monster Association, an organization of monsters under City Z intent on destroying the Hero Association. They attack various cities, recruit fighters by offering them "Monster Cells" that mutate humans into monsters, and kidnap a Hero Association executive's son. Garo bonds with Tareo, a child who idolizes heroes, as he hunts down more heroes, his combat prowess slowly rising. The Monster Association attempts to recruit him and kidnaps the child but Garo refuses. He storms the Monster Association HQ trying to rescue the child, but ultimately gets captured.

The Hero Association assaults the headquarters to rescue the executive's son, causing a battle that destroys City Z and kills almost every monster. During the raid, Saitama meets the highest-ranked hero Blast when he arrives to collect artifacts, he warns him of a threat known as "God". Many heroes are heavily injured when Garo emerges, mutated into a monster from the fighting. Unable to match the power of Saitama, Garo receives some of "God's" power when he meets it in a vision, causing him to emit radiation that kills all the heroes, including Genos by ripping out his core to get Saitama to fight him seriously. He briefly matches Saitama in a brutal battle that sends them across the Solar System After Saitama defeats him, Garo becomes distraught over Tareo's death and teaches Saitama to time travel before God kills him. Saitama goes back in time and subdues Garo before he kills the heroes, destroying his monster mutation and cosmic power. Despite the objections of the other heroes, Saitama spares Garo and lets him flee after Tareo stops them. Only Genos, who reconnected with his core from the original timeline bought by Saitama (who seemed to remember nothing of his battle and time travel with the original Garo), remembers the entire events of the original ominous future caused by Garo.

With the Monster Association destroyed, Saitama gets promoted to A-Class for defeating Garo. As the battle destroyed his apartment, he relocates to the Hero Association's HQ in A-City. The Hero Association's poor performance causes public opinion of them to plummet. Several heroes and officials decide to retire or defect to the Neo Heroes, a rival group appearing to be more effective in handling the growing monster threats.

Leading it is the hero Blue, who claims to be the son of Blast. However, Neo Heroes has even worse shady activities on turning many of its members and other people outside the organization, including Hero Association members into cyborg slaves, and possibly connected to Genos' past and even Bofoi. On the same day, Genos received a final upgrade from Kuseno and Saitama's power level is being studied at a capsule; Kuseno's unexpected assassination at the hands of robot assassins was just a beginning of the robot invasion.

Yuji Itadori is an unnaturally physically strong high school student living in Sendai. In June 2018, before his grandfather died, he instilled two messages within Yuji: "Always help others" and "Die surrounded by people". Yuji's friends attract Curses to the school when they unseal a rotten finger talisman. Yuji swallows the finger to protect student Jujutsu Sorcerer Megumi Fushigoro unwittingly becoming host to a powerful ancient sorcerer named Ryomen Sukuna. All sorcerers are required to exorcise Sukuna (and, by extension, Yuji) immediately. However, upon seeing Yuji surprisingly able to retain control over his body, Megumi's teacher Satoru Gojo, currently the strongest sorcerer in the modern world, brings him to the Tokyo Prefectural Jujutsu High School to train him as a sorcerer. He postpones Yuji's execution until he consumes all twenty of Sukuna's fingers so the Curse can be eliminated permanently with Yuji's death. Meanwhile, a group of intelligent Cursed Spirits plots a multi-layered attack on the world of Jujutsu sorcery, starting with sealing away Satoru Gojo to tip the balance of the world, as he is too strong to kill. led by a mysterious sorcerer and curse user named Suguru Geto, who was supposed to have been killed by Gojo a year prior and now sports stitches on his forehead. His entourage includes the sadistic Mahito, fire Curse Jogo, and nature Curse HanamiGojo's first-year class includes Yuji, Megumi, and Nobara Kugisaki. Part of their training is to go on missions to exorcise low-level curses, during which Sukuna takes an interest in Megumi, seeing his potential. Yuji can consume several of Sukuna's fingers while retaining his sense of self, impressing Gojo. He is also mentored by Gojo's colleague, first-grade sorcerer Kento Nanami. When his friend, a normal high school student named Junpei Yoshino, falls victim to Mahito's manipulations and is killed by him in front of Yuji, it marks a turning point for him, causing his first traumatic experience.

During a competition between the Tokyo and Kyoto Jujutsu schools, Cursed Spirits attack the students but the schools work together to fight them off. This turns out to be a distraction so Mahito can steal three "Death Paintings" (half-human half-Curses) from the Tokyo school, later summoning them to their full form. Yuji and Nobara kill two of the Death Paintings during a mission.

On Halloween 2018, Geto and the Cursed Spirits begin their ultimate plan by releasing several magical barriers over Shibuya to trap Gojo and normal civilians in. Though he puts up a fight and kills Hanami, Gojo is sealed away by Geto in the Prison Realm, a special artifact. The events reveal that the current Geto is not the original but rather Geto's corpse possessed by an ancient evil sorcerer named Kenjaku. Yuji and his allies face Kenjaku's forces in Shibuya to rescue Gojo but with Gojo gone, the Curses don't hold back, causing many casualties. Yuji faces Choso, the last and third Death Painting who fights him to avenge the killing of his brothers. Yuji is defeated, his life spared only due to Choso receiving a strange vision revealing that he and Yuji are also, in fact, brothers, related by blood. This causes him to switch loyalties, now siding with Yuji rather than Kenjaku. Jogo force-feeds an unconscious Yuji ten fingers at once, powering Sukuna enough to temporarily take over his body. Sukuna kills Jogo and battles Mahoraga, Megumi's most powerful and uncontrollable shikigami, causing Shibuya's near-destruction in the process.

Mahito kills Nanami and mortally wounds Nobara in front of Yuji to break him emotionally. With Todo's help, Yuji is able to defeat Mahito but is unable to stop Kenjaku from absorbing Mahito for his Cursed Technique. Kenjaku re-awakens countless new sorcerers throughout Japan that he had been planting for thousands of years, and unleashes a slew of Curses to usher in a world of Cursed Spirits reminiscent of the Heian period, the golden age of Jujutsu Sorcerers.

In the aftermath, the Jujutsu higher-ups reinstate Yuji's immediate execution, appointing second-year Yuta Okkotsu his executioner. Yuta, whose loyalty lies with Gojo, helps Yuji fake his death, and teams up with him, Megumi, and experienced sorcerer Yuki Tsukumo, along with Choso and second-year Maki Zen'in to meet Master Tengen, an immortal, part-Curse part-human sorcerer. Tengen reveals Kenjaku's plan to merge the former's consciousness with Japan's human population using "the Culling Games", a battle royale between all the awakened sorcerers to accumulate a massive amount of Cursed Energy to achieve this goal.

Maki is forced to kill her entire Zen'in clan when they lay a trap for her and kill her sister. Meanwhile, Yuji, Yuta, Megumi, second-year student Panda, and third-year student Kinji Hakari, seek out a mysterious woman named "Angel" who can free Gojo from the Prison Realm and help rescue Megumi's stepsister, Tsumiki, from participating in the Games. Kenjaku kills Yuki and captures Tengen. The group learns that Tsumiki has become a host for a reincarnated sorcerer, and Sukuna executes his ultimate plan: taking control of Megumi's body. He succeeds and kills Tsumiki to weaken Megumi's resolve. The main group uses Angel's power to free Gojo. Now unsealed, Gojo agrees to fight Sukuna on December 24.

Gojo faces off against Sukuna and Megumi's Ten Shadows. Although Gojo initially has the upper hand, Sukuna kills Gojo by slicing him in half. The rest of the sorcerers join in the battle as Sukuna revives himself to his true form. Meanwhile, Kenjaku is confronted by Fumihiko Takaba, a powerful sorcerer that proves an effective distraction, allowing Yuta to catch him off guard and decapitate him, though not before he adds a rule that allows Sukuna to become the Culling Games' master.

Yuta tells Sukuna he used Sukuna's last finger to copy his Cursed Technique. Maki, second year instructor Kusakabe, and Yuta's mentor Miguel all attempt to fight Sukuna, but all are overpowered. In a flashback, it is revealed that Sukuna ate his twin brother a thousand years ago in the womb because he was starving. Kenjaku then took the soul of Sukuna's twin brother and "made" Jin Itadori, Yuji's father, explaining why Yuji was able to contain Sukuna within him. This also makes Jin Sukuna's twin brother and Yuji his nephew. Choso sacrifices himself to protect Yuji.

Yuji and Todo overpower Sukuna, with Yuji impaling Sukuna's chest. As Sukuna attempts to use his Domain Expansion, he is stopped by Gojo's reappearance. However, Gojo is still dead; Yuta used Kenjaku's Cursed Technique to switch bodies with him. Yuji opens his own Domain Expansion; within it, he takes Sukuna on a journey through his hometown. Sukuna refuses to release Megumi; Yuji converses with Megumi's soul. Having been close to giving up, the conversation sparks Megumi's resolve to fight back. Sukuna realizes this and attempts to use his Domain Expansion. However, he realizes that one of the missing fingers on Yuji is not the one he took to possess Megumi. It is revealed that Yuta actually used one of Yuji's fingers instead. Meanwhile, Nobara arrives where Gojo hid Sukuna's last finger and uses it to attack Sukuna's soul. Yuji then lands a Black Flash on Sukuna, hitting his soul as well and turning the tide of the fight. Megumi frees himself from Sukuna as Yuji defeats him. He gives Sukuna one last chance, but Sukuna refuses and disintegrates away.

After the battle, Yuta is able to return to his own body again.
